Sixth century Chalukya monuments - Badami
Badami ( a.k.a. Vatapi ) was the capital of the Chalukyan empire ( 6th - 8th century A.D ) which extented in the time of great Chalukyan king Pulikesin II from Kanchipuram in TamilNadu to the banks of Narmada in the north and from Orissa in the east to the west coast.
After a set-back for a while owing to the attack of the Pallavas under Narashima Varman I, the Chalukyan kings regained their territory and gave impetus to the revival of the Hindu religion and Art.
Under the royal patronage of Chalukyam kings, Mahakuta, Aihole ( first capital of early Chalukyas ), Pattadakal and Badami ( a.k.a. Vatapi ) became great centres of experimentation in the Temple building.
