First capital of Hoysalas ( a Tenth century monumment ) - Belur
Belur which is refered as Velapuri in the ancient inscriptions was the first capital of Hoysalas.
The Hoysala king VishnuVardhana ( AD. 1108 - 1152 ) built the temple for VijayaNarayana in the capital, Belur, in the year 1117 Ad. in commemoration of his victory over Chola viceroy of Talakad.
The temple at Belur is popularly known as Chennakeshava temple.
The kings of Hoysala dynasty made solid contribution to the field of art.
The temple complex at Belur, a wonderful artistic creation of eternal beauty was built during the early twelfth century and the inscriptions at this temple speak of the master builders Dasoja and his son Chavana.
